Toxin Battles On The Homefront
There’s been a lot of talk about escalating childhood allergies these days, which is good because it draws attention to a very serious problem. But most of these reports focus on what might be triggering the allergies, rather than what’s causing them. We know that a children …and adults…can develop allergies to almost anything from cotton to raspberries to metals, but what behind the explosion in allergies? Why are so many of us reacting badly to the world around us and the foods we eat?
To me and many other health practitioners, the answer is simple. We are living in a world that has become much more toxic that nature ever intended. Our bodies were simply not designed to cope with the amount and obscene variety of toxins that now surround us, and they protest, loud and clear. Instead of looking for new and more potentially harmful ways to subdue the symptoms of allergy, we should be cleaning up our world and making it fit for human habitation.
Toxin Overload is a Major Factor in Allergy and Disease.
It is what happens when too many toxins have accumulated in your body. Even small amounts of different toxins build up over time until your body is simply not able to cope with them. You may not be able to get rid of all the toxins you and your family are exposed to outside the home, but you can make your home a safe haven. To do that you must reduce the total toxic load by removing as many of the toxins as you can from your home.
Your Clean House May Be Toxic!
The ordinary home is full of toxins that we or previous owners have brought in, and that any of these can trigger allergies. Just consider how many of the following unsuspected toxins may be in your home:
•Chlorine and/or flouride in water (even if your child drinks only filtered water, the chemicals in bath and shower
1000
water can enter through the skin)
•Chemical solvents and toxic fumes in building materials
•Aluminium in deodorants
•Latex in dish-washing gloves
•Petrochemicals in many personal care and household products
•Food additives in food
•Electromagnetic frequencies from computers, microwaves and mobile phones (any child living near a mobile phone tower or power line is in danger, as these have been proven to have serious effects on health, allergies, and mental wellbeing.)
•Toxins in sprays and treatments against cockroaches and ants
•Formaldehyde in carpets, polyester, spray starch and paper products
•Scotch guard on furniture to stop stains
•Poisons in fire retardants that stop clothing and upholstery from catching fire
That’s a lot of toxins…and that’s just a partial list.
Deadly Toxic Mixes
To make things worse, many of the chemicals in your home can also have different effects, depending on how you use them. For example, the chlorine in your water can release highly toxic gases when heated for a shower or bath. The chlorine in paper can also release fumes if you use a home photocopier. Alone, any of these toxins can affect a child, but the soup of different toxins interacting with each other can add new dangers to the environment.
Keep in mind that most toxic substance are tested alone, not in combination with other toxins, so even if a cleaner or paint has officially ‘acceptable’ levels of toxin, that does not say that it will be ‘safe’ when mixed with other toxins. The cleaner you use to wipe the kitchen cupboard might produce yet another toxin when mixed with the volatile gas given off by the varnish on the cupboard.
Children Are More Vulnerable To Toxins
Have you noticed that children are always the first victims of pollution disasters like those that occurred at the Three Mile Island and Chernobyl? That’s because children are more vulnerable to toxins than adults. What affects you mildly can be very dangerous to a child. For example, fumes that just give you a headache can kill a small child. Here’s why:
•Your child has a much smaller body mass, so the same amount of toxin affects them more than it does you.
•Your small child has a faster metabolism than you, and therefore takes more breaths than you do. Also, the toxins breathed in are circulated through the body faster.
•Your small child is lower to the ground than you. That’s where many powerful toxins such as natural gas, car exhaust, diesel exhaust, and heavy metals in the air tend to settle. Small children may be breathing them in while you are breathing cleaner air.
•Your child’s skin is thinner than your skin, and offers less protection from toxins that your child may come into contact with.
•Your child’s skin also contains less melanin, and provides less protection against the UV rays in sunlight.
•Your child’s body defences – the digestive and respiratory systems, and the immune system – may not be fully developed, in some cases, until around 7 years of age. Your child’s body may be less able to effectively neutralise and eliminate toxins. Therefore, your child cannot handle the same amount of toxin that you can safely handle.
•Your small child’s nervous system is less developed, so he or she is more affected by electromagnetic frequencies from nearby mobile phone towers and powerlines.
•Children may be exposed to toxins in the home that don’t affect you. For instance, small children often put things into their mouths, probably don’t wash their hands after going to the toilet, and play with potting mix or soil which may contain molds and other toxins.
•Children’s outside toys and play areas may be toxic from deposited pollution, airborne molds, and from the chemical compounds used to make them – especially plastic toys or toys made from particle board.
How worried should you be?

Can even the most cautious parent really remove all toxins from the home? Probably not. And it wouldn’t be desirable anyway. Unless your child is extremely hypersensitive to many different substances, a super-sterile environment may be more harmful than one in which your child is exposed to normal levels of microbes and toxins. An over-protected child cannot develop normally, and will end up with an even weaker immune system, because it won’t have the chance to develop.
Unless a family member is one of those very rare cases that require almost total exclusion of potentially toxic substances, you don’t have to go overboard. Remember that your aim is to reduce the toxic load on your family – not to turn your home into a hospital (Whoops, bad example, as many hospitals are more toxic than the average home!) …I mean, into a sterile prison.
Even Small Changes Can Help Protect Your Family
Every step you take to reduce your family’s exposure to toxins can make a difference. Start in one area (eg. food additives or plastics), then do a little more when you are ready. The small steps you take may be just enough to prevent your child’s body, or yours, from finally being overwhelmed.
